Prospective LPN students need to have proof of High School Diploma or GED and complete an application stating their intent to enroll in the practical nursing program. No prior college course credits are required to enroll in a practical nursing program.

Once accepted in a LPN program, students will study subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, and nursing specific courses. The concepts studied in class will be applied to practice in various settings including hospitals, long term care facilities and rehabilitation centers. All course work, clinical instruction and practice must be completed before one can qualify to take the licensing examination.

After completing a practical nursing program, graduate practical nurses must pass the NCLEX-PN exam to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN). Upon passing the NCLEX examination the graduate practical nurse will receive a license and be able to practice as a licensed practical nurse in Oregon. The need for qualified licensed practical nurses is increasing as the U.S. population is aging.

Health care jobs are constantly created in the communities due to the growing trend in home health care and the clients desire to remain in their homes for as long as possible. As a result of the current nurse shortage and the growing need to replace nurses leaving the profession, licensed practical nurses (LPN) will find increasing opportunities to select the work environment best suited for them, be it in a hospital, long term care, or home health care agencies.
